Resolution of Appreciation for NYPR Exemplary Service During Hurricane Sandy

Unanimously

WHEREAS,

Hurricane Sandy caused terrible loss of life and destruction of property on an unprecedented scale in New York, New Jersey and along the East Coast region of the United States; and

WHEREAS,

For five days, New York Public Radio's facilities were without electricity, and some of its stations' transmitters were disabled, but the staff's planning and resourcefulness ensured that all systems, including broadcasts, continued uninterrupted; and

WHEREAS,

New York Public Radio served as a lifeline for listeners during the course of the storm and its immediate aftermath by providing extended special coverage that included press conferences by elected officials, local call-in programs and featured interviews with listeners in especially hard-hit areas including the Jersey Shore, Long Island, Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS,

New York Public Radio created a number of on-line maps that helped audiences follow the path of the storm and track storm surges and flooding through New York and New Jersey; and

WHEREAS,

New York Public Radio created a transit tracker to help keep people up-to-date on the status of mass transportation systems while a map of the five boroughs provided color-coded updates on traffic jams; and

WHEREAS,

Many of the station's staff experienced personal hardship through the loss of electricity, heat and other essential services; and

WHEREAS,

The hard-hit communities of New York and New Jersey will depend on New York Public Radio for special coverage during the many months of recovery that still lie ahead; and

WHEREAS,

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting offers its deepest sympathies to our colleagues in New York and New Jersey for the losses and hardships they have suffered as a result of Hurricane Sandy; and

WHEREAS,

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting offers its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the staff, management and Board of Trustees of New York Public Radio for their extraordinary work in these difficult times.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting presents the first Community Lifeline Award to New York Public Radio to recognize the exemplary preparedness and service to their listeners in affected communities during Hurricane Sandy.
