Station List Practices
Unanimously
WHEREAS,
The Board has learned that certain public broadcasting stations have used their member or donor lists in a manner that has violated the public's trust regarding the use of such lists; and
WHEREAS,
Members and donors place their trust in public broadcasting stations that use of this information will be in a non-partisan manner consistent with practices that respect the privacy of these lists.
WHEREAS,
There exist federal rules and regulations that govern the use by public broadcasting stations of member and donor lists; and
WHEREAS,
The CPB Inspector General has undertaken a review of station practices in connection with the use of member and donor lists.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,
That, the Board hereby expresses both its strong objection to these practices and its determination that these practices be ended, and furthermore that the Board fully endorses and ratifies the steps taken to date by CPB management to eliminate such practices and supports the use of all means both legal and administrative to make sure such practices do not occur in the future; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,
That CPB management take all necessary additional steps to ensure that public broadcasting stations refrain from any use of member and donor lists in connection with political parties and campaigns or in other ways that fail to honor the preferences of their members and donors with respect to the use of this information and the trust of the American people.
