January 27, 2004
Appreciation to Elizabeth Campbell
Seven in favor, one absent
RESOLVED,
That the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Expresses Its Deep Appreciation for the Life and Work of
ELIZABETH PFOHL CAMPBELL
Educator
Public Television Pioneer
Founder, WETA
Winner, Ralph Lowell Medal
The Board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Elizabeth Campbell, whose early understanding of the power of television to reach and teach children led to the founding of WETA and its development into one of the nation's preeminent public television stations.
Mrs. Campbell's 50 years of service to educational television began long before today's infrastructure of government and community support was in place. Her efforts to convince skeptics that television would be a powerful educational resource helped secure significant federal support for educational television in the 1950's, and led to the creation of CPB in 1967. She laid the foundation on which WETA grew from a station with no facilities, no spectrum, and a single program to a powerhouse producer of nationally acclaimed programs and a rich educational resource.
Mrs. Campbell once said, "There is something about television that no other medium has. There is a power within it that is more than just what you see and hear." Her belief in television's power to educate has opened the world to generations of learners.
The Board expresses its appreciation for Mrs. Campbell's dedication to public broadcasting and extends its deepest sympathy to the Campbell family.
