7 in favor, 1 absent
WHEREAS,
The Congress directed CPB to make available competitively for public radio programming production 7% of funds annually appropriated for public radio purposes; and
WHEREAS,
CPB has consulted extensively with stations and their representation organizations at regional and national meetings and through advisory panels on public radio's programming priorities for the future; and
WHEREAS,
CPB management has reviewed the panel's advice in the context of the current media environment; and
WHEREAS,
Based on the advice received, CPB management recommends that, in order to increase awareness of and listening to public radio and to increase the value of the services that public radio provides, program fund grants in FY 2007 be awarded to projects that:
-- Increase the vitality and reach of the classical music format.
-- Provide coverage of the major issues of concern to American citizens.
-- Increase the diversity of voices on public radio by utilizing the talents of minority producers, reporters and hosts.
-- Use the internet to increase service to core listeners of traditional public radio formats or to attract new listeners with new formats.
-- Conduct research to identify and develop major new programming initiatives or to strengthen existing national programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,
That the CPB Board of Directors hereby adopts the above recommendations as CPB Radio's program fund priorities.
