Henry P. Becton, Jr.
President of WGBH, 1984-2007
Member of the Board of Directors, PBS Foundation
Vice Chair of the Association of Public Television Stations
The Board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Henry P. Becton, Jr., a creative and visionary force whose dedication to public broadcasting for the past 37 years has improved the lives of millions of Americans.
Henry Becton joined WGBH as a producer in 1970, rising to guide the Boston station to become one of public broadcasting's industry leaders. He led WGBH to national prominence as a production powerhouse (the source of such television icons as American Experience, Antiques Roadshow, Arthur, Between the Lions, Curious George, Frontline, Masterpiece Theatre, Mystery!, Nova, and This Old House, and radio's The World and Sound & Spirit) and technological innovator (including as a pioneer in online content and in media access for people who are hearing- or visually impaired).
Beyond the signature series and hundreds of awards lies a track record of unparalleled breadth -- and underlying it all, a profound commitment to public broadcasting's strength of purpose, editorial integrity, and public service mission. The high standards and trailblazing course set by Henry Becton have inspired public broadcasting's distinctive enterprise, and we are deeply grateful.
The Board expresses its admiration and sincere appreciation for Henry Becton's many years of dedication to enhancing the lives of his fellow citizens through public service media.
