Resolutions passed by the CPB Board of Directors

Resolution of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
May 17, 1988

Further Statement on CPB's Mission and Goals

Unanimously

WHEREAS,

The Board of Directors has reviewed the Mission and Goals Statement for the Corporation, as adopted January 31, 1986.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

The Board of Directors issues the following further statement on the Corporation's mission and goals:

The Board finds that the principal contributions that the Corporation can make to public broadcasting are, and should be, the following:

To fund the production and acquisition of excellent and diverse programming of more than local interest which is not available elsewhere; and

To maintain a system for connecting local public broadcasting stations so that they can share programming and make it available to all Americans. As public broadcasting enters its third decade, excellent and diverse programming remains its most important contribution and distinguishing characteristic, even in a media environment that is expanding the number of choices available to the viewer and listener.

The Board recognizes that the Corporation has unique advantages within the industry, including the ability to aggregate financial resources and make advanced and long-term financial commitments. The Corporation can make its greatest contribution to public broadcasting by concentrating its resources on the needs that are articulated by the public television and radio communities and that are consistent with CPB's original purpose: the funding and sharing of excellent and diverse programming.

Therefore, the Corporation's highest priority will be the support of activities which result in a clear and measurable difference in the quality and diversity of video and audio programming services available to all Americans.
