Resolution of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

Adjustments to Station Grant Programs

Unanimously

WHEREAS,

Public radio must continue to strengthen its audience service and to become more accountable to the listeners it serves, while preserving its enduring mission and values, including its noncommercial franchise, quality local and national programming, station and programming diversity, and the capacity to reach as many Americans as possible:

WHEREAS,

The Board acknowledges that, under the provisions of the Public Broadcasting Act, CPB makes grants to eligible public radio stations in a manner intended to bring public radio programming and related services into the lives of as many Americans as possible and to help public radio stations meet high professional standards,

WHEREAS,

Public radio must nurture fresh new national programming and strengthen existing national vehicles,

WHEREAS,

CPB maintains a Program Fund to fund the production of programs of high quality, diversity, excellence and innovation obtained from diverse sources, with strict adherence to objectivity and balance in programming of a controversial nature;

WHEREAS,

CPB maintains a Public Radio Future Fund to help public radio achieve greater accountability by supporting initiatives to increase the industry's nongovernmental financial support and to achieve increased productivity and new operating efficiencies that result in significant savings; and

WHEREAS,

Management has conducted a systematic review and consultation with stations, producers, and national organizations, and has sent a discussion paper of related issues to and invited comment from each CPB-funded public radio station and producer as part of its consultation;

NOW ,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

The CPB Board of Directors hereby adopts the Management recommendation to adjust station grant employee eligibility criteria and minimum nonfederal financial support criteria, and adopt Future Fund and Program Fund priorities as detailed in Management's recommendation of April 24, 1997, which is incorporated by reference (attached).
