Principles of CPB Grant-Making to Public Television

WHEREAS,

The Board recognizes that all public television stations are valuable local educational community resources which:

address the educational needs of the community,

give voice to community interests,

illuminate and foster solutions to local problems,

reflect and nurture the cultural and artistic diversity of the community and nation, and

address national concerns.

WHEREAS,

The Board acknowledges that, under the provisions of the Public Broadcasting Act, CPB makes grants to eligible public television stations in a manner intended to:

bring public television programming and related educational services into the lives of as many Americans as possible;

help public television stations meet high professional standards to ensure that stations serve viewers with programs and services of high quality, diversity, creativity, excellence, and innovation obtained from diverse sources; and

assist public television stations to reflect and serve the diverse audiences and cultures of the American people.

WHEREAS,

The Board has received a report and recommendations of Management after it engaged in an extensive consultation with the public television system on a review of CPB Public Television grants programs. The consultation included meetings with more than 120 stations and numerous sessions with a CPB-appointed Overview Advisory Committee and Television Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS,

Management recommends that CPB adopt a single statement of Principles of CPB Grant-Making to Public Television Stations.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,

The Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting hereby approves Management's recommendations regarding the Principles of CPB Grant-Making to Public Television as outlined in Management's memorandum dated May 12, 1993.
