Resolutions passed by the CPB Board of Directors

Resolution of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
January 26, 2010

Condolences to the Family of Robben Wright Fleming

Unanimously

RESOLVED,

That the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Expresses its Heartfelt Condolences to the Family of

Robben Wright Fleming

President, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 1979-1981

We will long remember with gratitude Mr. Fleming’s years of service at the corporation.

Mr. Fleming led CPB in its response to the second Carnegie Commission on the future of public broadcasting, reaffirming the importance of CPB as part of the public broadcasting system.

He strengthened CPB as an editorial firewall by helping to create CPB’s program fund and instituting the use of panels of outside experts for evaluating program proposals.

He increased the diversity of the public broadcasting system by doubling the grant programs for the training and development of minority and women employees and executives at public broadcasting stations.

He focused attention on the financial management and reporting of public broadcasting stations, bringing them into line with generally accepted accounting standards for non-profit organizations.

He secured a 15-year, $150-million grant from the Annenberg school of communication, making possible the first Annenberg/CPB project to support the production of dozens of high-quality, college-level courses for delivery through public broadcasting and other noncommercial telecommunications systems.

And he pointed public broadcasting toward the future by encouraging and funding extensive research and experimentation in a wide variety of telecommunications technologies.

The Board extends its deepest sympathies to the Fleming family.
