Recognizing the importance of attracting talent to public broadcasting and cultivating a diverse range of voices, backgrounds, cultures, and ideas within the industry, CPB underwrites a work-study scholarship program through the Emma Bowen Foundation, an organization that facilitates minority student placements within the media industry. In 2009, 63 students were selected to participate in the Foundation’s multiyear work-study program in 25 cities around the country. CPB reimburses public media stations for half of the student’s wages, up to $2,000 per year, for a total of up to $10,000 over the five-year program period. CPB also contributes to the scholarship fund managed by the Emma Bowen Foundation.

Emma Bowen Foundation, Washington, D.C.—Created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry, the Emma Bowen Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks following their junior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the five-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills, while corporations have the opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees. This unique, multiyear program prepares a diverse group of young professionals to enter the work force with specific job-related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment, and a strong foundation for advancement. CPB contributes to the Emma Bowen Scholarships, helping to support the approximately 60 to 70 new students in the program each year.
