TONGAN TATATAU

Jacob Holcomb, Beetleswamp Productions LLC

Honolulu, HI

Aisea Toetu’u is the first tattooist to administer the Tongan Tatatau in over 170 years. Before being banned by King Tupou I under the influence of Christian missionaries, the Tatatau was once an important right of passage in Tongan culture. Against the advice of his elders, Aisea struggled to bring the practice back and now stands at the door of finally being accepted by the Kingdom that once looked down upon tattoos as prison art.
