WIPR-TV produces an average of more than 1,600 hours of local programming a year. This includes public affairs, culture, sports, music, talk, and food shows as well as the island’s only round-the-clock news channel, Noticias 24/7—all in Spanish. The station also holds workshops for parents, caregivers, and teachers to help guide them in working as a team to use public television as a powerful educational tool. This outreach includes a focus on on economically challenged families. In addition, WIPR developed a special block of programming for its audience with special needs. Local programs are broadcast with closed captions for the deaf community and with video descriptions for the blind community.

During 2009–2010, WMTJ-TV (Sistema TV) transmitted 993 hours of local programming in Spanish. Over the last two years, the station, which is licensed to the Ana G. Mendez University System, has developed 23 local shows. The 13-episode Aventura Cientifica (Scientific Adventures) was produced in collaboration with the university’s Universidad Metropolitana School of Environmental Affairs. The university’s culinary arts school collaborates on a WMTJ food show. And the station shot more than 90 hours of college sports last year. In addition, WMTJ provided general educational services through its Ready To Lead in Literacy (RTLL) program. During 2009–2010, 888 parents and tutors attended the station’s 56 RTLL workshops geared toward a limited-English-proficiency population. Lastly, the station partnered with Sociedad Americana del Cancer Por tu Salud on a five-program series providing cancer prevention educational content and with Ultima Hora con el Colegio de CPA on a three-program series providing education regarding the income tax system.
