WTJX Channel 12’s Home Grown promotes healthier eating habits and encourages people to save money during a tough economy by growing their own food. The Virgin Islands Public Television System partnered with the Department of Agriculture and University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Services to initiate the Home Grown community engagement program. The program, which began airing in the fall of 2010, educates participants and the general public, over the air and online, in both the theory and practice of gardening techniques such as drip irrigation installation, mulching, and terrace building. Agriculture professionals give participants hands-on demonstrations in site preparation, soil preparation, seed sowing, irrigation installation, and transplanting. WTJX films the demonstrations and technical assistance sessions, producing a 14-part instructional series. In the end, participating home gardeners will reap a harvest of fresh, healthy tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, okra, beets, basil, and lettuce.
