About 100 newspapers have closed their news bureaus in Washington in the past year, leaving 27 states with no localized Capitol Hill coverage. Capitol News Connection (CNC) is now virtually the only source many communities can depend on to provide locally relevant accounts of the actions of their members of Congress. Through CNC, every station effectively has its own team of reporters on Capitol Hill, providing affordable, high-quality reports customized for each market. In the next year, CNC will build on its reputation for creative, lively, and balanced reporting; continue its efforts to widen the scope and diversity of the public media audience, particularly to Hispanic and other underserved audiences; and—through its daily coverage—hold lawmakers accountable. CNC will target its marketing efforts on those states without Capitol Hill coverage.
