Past/Present (formerly American Dynasties) is a multiplatform approach to teaching American history to middle school students. Its chief component is a multiplayer computer game that focuses on a specific period in American history. Students receive a first-person understanding of daily life during a specific period by playing characters based on ordinary people from that era whom they then navigate through historically accurate environments. Phase II of this project will build a richer historical context related to labor conditions in early-20th-century America as depicted in a fictional mill town of that era. New functions will allow students to access period photographs and primary sources as well as timelines and commentary. A broadcast component for students will also be developed. The program, game, and supporting materials will be tested in New York City and Maryland before nationwide distribution.
