This online media project will be part of a larger transmedia production that includes the film The Way We Get By. It will consist of two social media components: “Returning Home,” an innovative, multifaceted online space that will allow users to become greeters and support the troops; and an expansion of P.O.V.’s “RE: Vietnam” into “RE: War,” a comprehensive archive of stories and ongoing dialog among veterans of all wars.
“Returning Home” will include the following:
(a) “Mosaic of Support,” an entry point that will allow users to add photos, videos, and text;
(b) “Vigil Room,” which will feature personal stories of fallen soldiers provided by their families and friends; and
(c) “Virtual Care Package,” which will allow friends, families, and others to bundle their messages of support and send them to an active soldier, a soldier returning home from a current war, or a veteran of a past war.
“RE: War” will include (a) “Stories,” which will be updated to improve the process of archiving, tagging, and sharing stories and interacting with other users;
(b) “Dialogue,” which will include frank intergenerational discussions among veterans that the public can read and comment upon;
(c) “Images and Video,” which will incorporate content from sites like YouTube and Flickr related to themes on the “RE: War” site; and
(d) “Twitter,” which will include tweets from soldiers returning home.
