To help communities address massive dropout rates, Roadtrip Nation (RTN), working with presenting station KQED, San Francisco, will create an education and engagement toolkit for public media stations in targeted areas of California, Texas, New York, and Washington. The toolkit will include an RTN hub on the stations’ Web sites featuring the curriculum, access to the digital video archive, and educator resources. RTN will execute local “on-campus” events in collaboration with each station, provide financial support and technical assistance. RTN will leverage its work with The College Board, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), and California’s Regional Occupational Programs to help stations build local partnerships for implementing RTN. These resources will help do the following: Increase relevance in students’ educational experiences by connecting them to the real world via RTN experiential learning programs and engaging multimedia content; broaden student exposure to opportunities related to their individual passions and interests; develop students’ 21st-century skills in research, project management, communications, team work, and leadership as well as technology and written communication skills. Through a combination of an annual PBS series, online content, digital interview archive, an innovative curriculum, and live local events, Roadtrip Nation has been helping high school and college students, especially at-risk students in disadvantaged communities, gain access to life pathways that they might have otherwise not known existed. This project is part of a multifaceted CPB plan, in development, to address the public media role in dropout prevention.
