[Pilot] NewsHour Student Reporting Labs

The NewsHour Student Reporting Labs will match professional journalist mentors at five stations (Louisiana Public Broadcasting, Utah Education Network, WHYY in Philadelphia, KLRU/KUT in Austin, Texas, and WHUT in Washington, DC) with local economically disadvantaged and/or experimental high schools to provide content, curriculum and support for students in order to demonstrate that the act of generating video-based journalism is a powerful teaching and learning experience. The selected schools are in low-income areas and/or are part of experimental public school environments. Students will create their own news story segments using and editing clips from the NewsHour, uploading and incorporating their own video content. By building an innovative “cloud computing” space, the NewsHour, stations, and students will create “digital learning objects” that can be used in classrooms across the country, used on the NewsHour’s existing Patchwork Nation and Student Voices sites, and highlighted on local PBS station websites and broadcasts.
