Mormons Make Movies

This film examines the now-booming Mormon film industry and its origins within the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Studio of the 1960s. The film’s director, a fifth-generation former Mormon of mixed ethnicity, re-engages the religion to explore creativity, craft and social identity within its controversially clean-cut culture. She interacts with students currently pursuing film degrees at the university, observes acclaimed filmmakers who have crossed over into Hollywood and explores difficulties the devout face in retaining their beliefs when dipping in to mainstream culture.
