StoryCorps’ National Teachers Initiative

The StoryCorps’ National Teachers Initiative, funded by CPB and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is designed to honor the work of educators across the country and to celebrate their impact on the lives of young people. StoryCorps is a groundbreaking public radio project with a mission to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of their lives. In the course of this National Teachers Initiative, StoryCorps will record, share and preserve the stories of teachers from school districts—both rural and urban—with high dropout rates. StoryCorps is to collect interviews in 10 markets identified through CPB’s American Graduate initiative, recording the interviews during teacher town halls with local public media stations. More than 600 interviews were collected and archived in the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center, and 10 interviews were broadcast on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday and made available as podcasts at npr.org.
