This is a three-year grant to provide programming and operational support for the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), one of the national minority programming consortia designated by CPB to provide culturally relevant content for the public media system. CPB funds these consortia as part of its commitment to develop and fund high-quality, culturally diverse programming for the American viewing public. This multiyear contract is a major shift in the relationship between CPB and NBPC; in the past, NBPC grants were awarded annually, with separate contracts for programming and operations activities. The grant will provide financial stability for NBPC’s operational and programming base for activities and services, thus enabling NBPC to maintain continuity while implementing strategic activities to connect African American audiences to public media. Further, this grant will provide resources for NBPC to expand on the Public Media Corps initiative to recruit and train fellows to work in public media institutions. Funds will also be used on funding diverse programming content, as well as other initiatives to encourage public media engagement with younger, digitally savvy communities of color.
