This film follows the path of an immigrant negotiating his survival in a foreign world, caught in the U.S. criminal justice system and ultimately transforming himself into a powerful force for social justice. Haunted by his past and the damage done to the victims of his crime, Eddy has since risen as a self-taught writer and poet and one of the most visible activists for the growing Asian American prisoner population. This film employs verité footage as he attends his deportation proceedings, works with at-risk youth and mentors inmates at San Quentin. Providing a complex and honest portrayal of its subject, the film highlights the rapid increase of Asian immigrants and refugees being incarcerated and deported—a critical civil rights issue facing the U.S. today.
