StoryCorps

StoryCorps captures the voices of everyday Americans on CDs, shares those stories with public radio's listeners, and generates some of the best radio content heard today, anywhere.

Headed by MacArthur Fellow and public radio veteran Dave Isay, StoryCorps is an independent not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of their lives. It is one of the largest oral history projects ever undertaken, and millions listen to its weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition and on storycorps.org.

September 11th initiative

In 2005, StoryCorps began a special initiative to honor and remember the stories of September 11, 2001: the stories of survivors, rescue workers, and all those most personally and immediately affected by September 11th. With permission, interviews become part of the collection at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, in addition to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Historias initiative

The Historias Initiative brings StoryCorps and public broadcasting directly to Latinos. This Initiative celebrates the stories of this nation’s largest ethnic minority, and has recorded more than 1,000 stories of Latinos across the United States in both English and Spanish since 2009. Last year CPB provided a grant to launch this historic undertaking.

StoryCorps animations on PBS

StoryCorps is working with some of the nation's best animators to bring its most popular radio stories to public TV. This year, StoryCorps will be airing these animated short films on the PBS documentary series POV. Recently, YouTube featured one of these animated films on its homepage, garnering a million views in one day.

Connecting to communities and within communities is central to the mission of CPB and public broadcasting. StoryCorps’ vital public service work will continue to provide public broadcasting with stories that celebrate the character, heart, and spirit of the country, and preserve these diverse American voices for generations to come.
