The Future of Public Media

Following-up on its development of a Congressionally-mandated National Broadband Plan, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) launched a project in January 2010 to examine “the future of media and the information needs of communities in a digital age.”

CPB’s leadership and that of public media’s three other principal national organizations – PBS, NPR, and the Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) – commissioned a series of one-on-one interviews and online focus groups with the leaders of many public broadcasting and other public media organizations, seeking consensus on some of the major issues raised by the FCC’s project.

This white paper describes that consensus – a vision of the extraordinary and invaluable contribution that public media will make in the digital age.
