Ready To Learn Transmedia Demonstration Stations – Cohort #1 Q&A

Questions from Potential Respondents, with CPB Answers
As of November 13, 2012

Note: Questions that are similar to each other are only listed and answered once.

Question 1: May a proposal include only two community partners (one that participated in the original project period & a new partner), or must all partners from the original project period be included in addition to a new partner or partners?

Response 1: Proposals do not have to include all partners from the original project period, but at least one of the partners must be from the original project period.

Question 2: Has PBS KIDS converted its PBS KIDS Lab and the online games to HTML 5 or are they primarily in Flash?

Response 2: PBS KIDS Lab is mobile browser accessible, but not all of the games that link from it are mobile-friendly. Some of the games are in HTML 5 and more will be developed this way by the end of Year 3. In the mean time, most of Ready To Learn’s online games are Flash based.

Because no mobile devices will support Flash going forward, as Adobe has discontinued support, mobile devices are able to access the mobile browser accessible content and apps.

PBS is planning a device review in the coming months and will share this information with the entire system of public television stations when ready.

Question 3: Does CPB plan to allocate the $110,000 of funding among four demonstration stations evenly?

Response 3: In order to support as many stations as possible, CPB hopes to divide available funding as evenly as possible among four recipients.

Question 4: Will CPB require stations to travel for a group meeting, e.g. Boot Camp, as part of this project?

Response 4: There are no plans for a Ready To Learn Station Boot Camp for the stations in Cohort #1.

Question 5: In fulfilling the requirement of including at least one new partner in their proposal, may a station include a partner who had originally planned to participate as a major partner in the original project but was unable to do so?

Response 5: Yes, but the justification for such a partnership should be explained within the proposal narrative.
