CPB recognizes the importance of attracting talent to public broadcasting and cultivating the range of voices, backgrounds, cultures, and ideas within the industry. Accordingly, CPB has developed a work/study scholarship program in partnership with the Emma Bowen Foundation, an organization that facilitates minority student placements within the media industry. The program will operate as follows:
Stations/Producers with successful applications will interview and select students from the pre-screened group of candidates, provided by the Foundation.
Stations/Producers selecting a candidate agree to hire the student for up to ten (10) weeks a summer for five (5) consecutive summers or year around and up to six (6) weeks a summer for three (3) consecutive years, depending on the program.
Stations/Producers participating in the program will structure the summer and yearlong work sessions so that students develop a diverse working knowledge while rotating through multiple functional areas of the station/producer over the term of the program.
CPB will reimburse stations for 50% of the student's wages for the summer work session up to $2,000 and $4,000 per year respectively depending upon the program, for a total of up to $10,000 over the five-year or $12,000 three-year program period. CPB will also pay into a 100% match scholarship fund (up to $4,000 and $6,000 respectively) disbursed by the Foundation for the students tuition and other college-related expenses (specifics on the use of the scholarship funds to be provided to the students by the Foundation).
