American Archive Executive Summary Booklet

The United States public broadcasting system has been the primary source of trusted programming for generations of Americans. From groundbreaking science and public affairs to wholesome educational programming, public broadcasting has amassed a wealth of content that remains significant long after broadcast. However, our system currently lacks the infrastructure to archive this content for future generations.

CPB commissioned and recently completed an initial phase of exploration for such an archive. Known as the American Archive, this project will serve the American public by preserving, exhibiting, and sharing the enduring programming produced and distributed by the public broadcasting system. The Archive will make use of emerging technologies to allow access to this content by educational and cultural institutions, public broadcasting stations, and the general public.

The initial phase served to develop the strategic vision for the American Archive, resulting in a detailed report and related materials. CPB is beginning next steps for this project, including developing a communication that includes an executive summary of the first phase and an expectation about our next steps, which can be distributed to the public broadcasting system, other key stakeholders, and the general public.
