CPB distributes the majority of its funds for public broadcasting directly to Radio and Television stations through the Community Service Grant (CSG) Program. CSG funds are used to support general station operations and programming.
Entry to the Radio CSG program was limited to stations that provide the first public radio service to a region or minority stations in certain limited circumstances. Under the revised policy approved by the CPB Board in late 2005, eligibility for the CSG program has been significantly expanded. Under the policy, any station able to meet a specified minimum level of service to its community would be eligible for funding. As is the case for stations already receiving CSGs, applicant stations must also meet a variety of legal, managerial, staffing, and operational criteria as prerequisites for CSG funding.
The Radio CSG program is a single grant program consisting of several levels of qualification, and each level has specific requirements that determine the amount of funding that will be awarded to the grantee. Based on the information the applicant provides in its application, CPB will determine the appropriate CSG Level.
