The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with guidance from the Digital Consultation Panel which is comprised of leadership from public radio and television membership organizations and representatives of the station community, has recommended an additional allocation of funds for digital radio transmission projects.
In light of the FCC's January 27th Order on increasing FM digital power, CPB is giving priority to applications for digital radio transmission projects that increase IBOC power levels up to the FCC allowed maximum. In addition, CPB will continue to support complete digital conversion projects and other projects that facilitate the delivery of digital content, multicasting and other advanced digital radio services.
The purpose of the Digital Radio Conversion Fund is to ensure all Americans have access to digital public radio. The program is not intended for the replacement of worn-out equipment.
To date, CPB has approved funding for the digital conversion of over 600 public radio transmitters. Over 550 public radio stations have completed conversions and are now transmitting digital signals. Of those, nearly 180 are multicasting with over 230 multicast streams.
Please download the Program Guidelines for detailed information, including proposal requirements.
Based on discussions with stations concerning their approaches to the IBOC power increase and recent solutions showcased at NAB 2010, CPB has elected to extend the closing date for the FY10-01 Digital Radio Round to May 14, 2010.
