Position Summary:
The Senior Reporter, Online / Blogger is expected to provide a daily, comprehensive view of higher education news in Minnesota via original reporting and collecting sto-ries, events and trends from elsewhere as blog items, headlines and story summaries on MPRNewsQ.org with the intent to engage and inform our audience. The Senior Reporter, Online / Blogger is expected to establish an authoritative presence on the higher education beat while establishing a strong local profile and a national reach through NPR and the wider public broadcasting system. This position will work at the direction of the editor overseeing higher education coverage and in collaboration with the MPR News online team. Some general website duties, such as updating and maintaining particular sections or pages, may be required.
This is a grant-funded position running From July through December 2011.
Position Responsibility:
• Report on higher education news within the state of Minnesota -- including na-tional stories as they relate to Minnesota – by producing several posts daily for new blog covering higher education.
• Writes about the day’s news and curates related materials from elsewhere online in an informal, conversational style that comports with MPR News’ edito-rial on-air voice.
• Work closely with the radio higher education beat reporter, serving as a key team member of the education team.
• Work with web editors and radio producers to identify online opportunities that compliment or augment the broadcast content and related events.
• Solicits and edits contributions from others at MPR News.
• Consistently and enthusiastically engages with readers and the NewsQ com-munity in comment threads and other social media community venues.
• Cultivates sources, identifies important trends in higher education and collects and verifies information through a variety of online and offline channels.
• Maintains a wide variety of sources and initiate PIJ involvement, including meetings and other stand-alone online projects and data-driven applications
• Establish relationships with college and university newspapers.
• Review photos from wire services and other sources and edit them in Photo-shop.
• Works collaboratively with programmers and technical staff.
• Operates independently on story construction, content and writing
• Performs public outreach as needed
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Seven to 10 years’ daily journalism experience in traditional media, including daily reporting and editing.
• Minimum of two years professional Web site experience.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Strong writing skills, with a journalism background.
• Subject matter expertise and a solid journalistic track record.
• Ability to deliver substantive reports, including breaking news, in a wide variety of media formats and on deadline
• Passion for blogging.
• Understanding of social media universe.
• Excellent language skills, including writing and copy editing.
• Signature, authoritative blogging voice
• Familiarity with HTML and Web publishing tools
• Given the dynamic nature of a blog which is updated several times a day, the successful candidate will need to exhibit outstanding editorial judgment, accu-racy, and integrity
• In addition to online expertise, the successful candidate should also be able to provide “live” radio reports and two-ways on the topic of immigration and emerging communities for use on the air
• Knowledge of AP Style
• Good research and organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively under pressure
• Ability to maintain productive and positive communication with co-workers
• Ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision
• Ability to work and coordinate well with web developer(s) on interactive immi-gration projects
• Provide creative multimedia ideas for online interactive projects.
• Flexibility, ability to respond to changing priorities
• Ability to handle tight deadlines and quick-turnaround demands
Preferred Skills and Experience:
• Coverage of higher education.
• Radio production experience.
• Experience working with streaming media, especially audio.
• Understanding and ability to apply Web design and usability principles
• Experience with shooting and editing video for the Web.
• Experience developing a successful niche news site, building audience, estab-lishing a social media brand, and stoking community engagement.
• Experience with producing photo galleries, audio slideshows, and video
• Fluency in Spanish.
