Program Director

WUNC-FM

WUNC-FM, the public radio station licensed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, seeks a highly experienced news and public affairs programmer to serve as the station’s program director. The PD will oversee the creation and direction of original news and information programming as well as guide the content of our nationally syndicated programs. The program director leads a news and programming staff of twenty-two employees including direct supervision of the news director, executive producer and senior producers of talk programming, the website coordinator and operations manager.

WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of five stations, with a weekly cume of 280,000 listeners. Our national show The Story reaches a weekly audience of 748,000. In addition to our news department, other productions include The State of Things, a live program devoted to bringing the issues, personalities, and places of North Carolina to our listeners, Back Porch Music -home grown at WUNC and our longest continually running locally-produced program and the People’s Pharmacy, a national weekly program co-produced at WUNC.

North Carolina Public Radio is a highly regarded, community oriented organization that consistently outperforms its market size. The Research Triangle Park, including Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, consistently ranks as one of the nation’s top places to live, and provides a strong and loyal listener base for WUNC. The station has an experienced and highly skilled staff that provide award-winning news and programming to its listeners.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, with a master’s degree preferred. Ten years experience as journalist or broadcast producer required. Applicants should possess management and supervisory experience, with increasing responsibility in each successive position.

Leading candidates will have experience supervising public radio programming, considerable knowledge of radio broadcasting equipment, including digital editing, broadcast operating boards, and exceptional written and oral communication skills. A familiarity with North Carolina, national and international issues is preferred. Experience with planning and executing on-air pledge drives is a plus.
