Director, APM Digital Media

The Director for Digital Media is the senior leader responsible for the vision, strategic planning, and administration of Digital Media activity within American Public Media, National Content (APM).

In a constantly evolving media landscape, the Director considers every new opportunity for APM digital content to innovate and to fulfill public service. This includes consideration of editorial and revenue projects on air, online, in mobile and social media.

The Director provides strategic leadership for all Digital Media activities within APM (including content , business development, technology development, and revenue strategies). This includes planning for the production and distribution of content that complements and extends our public service beyond radio broadcast, setting and coordinating strategies for APM internet sites, identifying, evaluating and maximizing opportunities to secure and develop digital and interactive media assets and related revenue for the APM.

The Director works in a highly matrixed environment within the APM national division and within APM/MPR and is expected to coordinate strategy with other initiatives in the company, including the work of the Senior Vice President of Digital Innovation.

Beyond responsibilities for daily operations, the Director looks ahead two to five years to ensure that APM is prepared to accomplish its mission and deliver its public services within an environment of rapidly changing media platforms, technologies, competitive entities, and audience expectations.

Position Responsibility:

• Facilitate, determine and articulate the vision for all Digital Media for APM;
• Establish strategic priorities and goals, lead planning , implementation and monetization of APM digital activity, making sure it aligns with APM’s mission, vision and strategic goals.
• Recruit, support, train, mentor, motivate and lead a high quality, high performance team in collaboration with other APM leaders;
• Collaborate with APM content leads to ensure digital activity is consistent with programming vision and goals.
• Create innovative ways to position APM content online including oversight of APM PIJ activity.
• Develop strategy to integrate online activity creatively with on-air production activity
• Ensure and in many cases recommend journalistic policies for APM activity online.
• Optimize revenue potential among APM digital media sites and interactive activities, working closely with revenue and marketing leaders to drive revenue growth through a combination of direct sponsorship opportunities, partner-related revenue agreements, and advertising network inventory;
• Be an active advocate of new tools, products, services and marketing that will ensure rapid and sustainable scaling of the digital media services;
• Drive digital media innovation, looking ahead on trends, using best practices and available technology to create new concepts and new ways to engage audiences;
• Identify new digital media sites and activities through a combination of personal and professional networks, strategic outreach, environmental scans and market sizing, and conference/trade show attendance;
• Implement and maintain reporting systems that enable data-driven business decisions;
• Negotiate strategic alliances, partnerships and Digital Media contracts in collaboration with Shared Services, revenue leaders and Business Development;
• Monitor audience metrics, financial performance and Key Performance Indicators (KPI), and meet expected return-on-investment (ROI) targets for all Digital Media-related activities;
• Prepare summaries and reports on the activities of APM Digital Media for senior management.

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in digital media, business, or related field
• Seven years’ successful and increasing administrative, management, strategic planning and business development experience
• Experience in journalism/media
• Supervisory/management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach inspire and lead.
• Experience leading consumer-facing interactive media, web applications and products with substantial traffic volumes and increasing scale;
• Experience with advertising management platforms and web analytic systems;
• Track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives;

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Thorough understanding of interactive media, publishing, direct marketing and other electronic information and emerging communication technologies (experience with radio or TV broadcasting a plus);
• Passion for digital media and its capability to enrich and inform people and strengthen communities, and an understanding of its potential for communications, audience development, service and revenue growth
• Ability to plan, implement and independently manage multiple projects
• Understanding of content and business opportunities for emerging media and distribution platforms (eg portable wireless devices)
• Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills — proficiency in working as part of an executive team and working in a cross-functional environment
• Strong professional initiative, bearing and confidence
• Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and independently managing multiple projects;
• Extensive knowledge in monetizing online platforms via advertising / sponsorship, affiliate revenues and e-commerce;
• Track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives;
• Passion for interactive media and desire to serve as a change agent to improve digital media offerings;
• Demonstrated personnel skills and ability to motivate staff and others
• Strong verbal presentation and writing skills
• Embody and reflect the values of APM
• Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Master’s degree in digital media, business, or related field highly desirable
• Entrepreneurial experience, including successful start-ups and growing new businesses with particular emphasis in launching and leading sustainable digital media business activities highly desirable
