WRVO General Manager
WRVO, Central New York’s award-winning National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate and online service licensed to the State University of New and located on the SUNY Oswego campus, seeks a General Manager with outstanding qualifications and experience. The station employs 16 full-time and two part-time staff including four full-time journalists.
WRVO ranks 6th in the nation among public radio stations for metro AQH share. Repeatedly ranked among the top ten stations in the Syracuse MSA, WRVO carries the full NPR talk format. The WRVO studios and equipment are state-of-the-art, newly installed in a complete renovation in 2005-2006. Ongoing collaboration between WRVO and SUNY Oswego’s undergraduate broadcast media program has produced many prominent journalists and media executives. WRVO recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with yet another year of record-breaking listener and underwriter financial support.
The WRVO General Manager oversees all aspects of the operation including programming, technical services, FCC regulatory policies and procedures, personnel/budgets, financial development, grant writing, and event management. The successful candidate will cultivate productive relationships among WRVO staff, listeners, donors, and a growing list of corporate and institutional underwriters. S/he will work to increase regionally relevant news and public affairs programming, foster collaborations with other public radio stations, and strengthen WRVO’s involvement in NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
The General Manager reports to the SUNY Oswego Vice President for Development and works closely with other college officials and community leaders in the Upstate New York region. S/he will lead an experienced, award-winning staff that underpins one of the most successful public radio stations in the country.
Required:
- Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Five years broadcast management experience in a corporate or institutional setting
- Familiarity with FCC rules and regulations relevant to radio station operations
- Experience generating operating revenues in a corporate or institutional setting
- Proven oral communication and writing skills
- Demonstrated success in community and professional networking
Desired qualifications:
- Graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Demonstrated success in grant writing and/or other fundraising for non-profit programs and/or initiatives
- Knowledge of NPR, CPB and other public radio funding and program services
- Familiarity with trends in emerging media distribution platforms and technologies
- Knowledge of the public radio mission and its diverse audience
