Senior Producer for National Programming

North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC-FM, the public radio station licensed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is seeking a Senior Producer to supervise the research, production and broadcast of its nationally syndicated program ‘The Story’ with Dick Gordon. ‘The Story’ is a news and public affairs program produced at WUNC-FM. The program is distributed to more than 100 stations by American Public Media, has more than 750,000 listeners a week (FA 2009) and is podcast 500,000 times a month. Successful applicants for the Senior Producer position will have proven experience in first-person narrative journalism, a commitment to innovation and an adventurous spirit that will help bring new voices to public radio.

The Senior Producer leads content selection and helps set the editorial direction for the program. Job duties include extensive research into current issues in cultural trends, politics, health care, public policy and other issues. The Senior Producer supervises a Managing Editor, four broadcast producers, freelancers, and works closely with the program host and fill-in hosts. The Senior Producer also manages budgets, schedules, resources and assists the Program Director and General Manager with marketing and grant writing efforts.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, with a master’s degree preferred. Ten years experience as a journalist or broadcast producer is required with increasing responsibility in each successive position. A minimum of five years management and supervisory experience is required. WUNC will consider applicants with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Candidates must have excellent journalistic research and writing skills. A demonstrated ability to plan and meet deadlines, working with materials from a variety of sources and collaborators, is essential. Experience finding guests who are "regular people” and producing programs that feature guests who are not typically interviewed by mainstream media is beneficial. A familiarity with national and international issues is strongly preferred. Experience in digital editing is preferred.
