WGBH Radio's news department seeks to inform, educate and enlighten our audience on both the news of the day and the news in historical context through in-depth, high quality radio journalism. WGBH Radio produces local and international shows and collaborates with national news outlets. The Higher Education Desk is established to create a dialogue on the complex issues related to higher education by informing the public from multiple perspectives.
Position Overview:
This position will create and manage the Higher Ed Desk, working with the internal and external editorial partners. He/she will manage the overall project including the administration, staffing, and financial aspects. He/she will be responsible for putting together a team of freelance reporters and provide editorial guidance to the team. He/she will also be responsible for identifying and crafting audio and web content that addresses issues and ideas within the complex field of higher education, creating and informing a dialogue on its future. Reporting will offer multiple perspectives from innovators, scholars, policy makers, faculty, students and parents, and others, on a range of topics including, for example, “the neuroscience of how we will learn," “new business models for Universities," fulfilling the social contract," etc... The goal is to place at least two stories per month on a variety of national and local platforms that can help drive public awareness, engagement and conversation about the implications of the educational challenges and developments facing the United States and the rest of the world.
Skills Required:
• Ability to manage a project with multiple stakeholders. • Excellent organizational skills. • Strong and developing knowledge of higher education “beat.” • Experience in public radio news. • Energetic, curious, self-starter with a demonstrated ability to sell a story with a conversational, breezy tone. • The ability to take what could be a dry subject and make it both interesting and meaningful to a smart, curious general audience. • Education reporting experience is helpful but not required. • Demonstrated radio reporting, digital news and production skills with strong audio and script editing ability. • Established and demonstrated professional on-air delivery, use of sound to create scenes that engage a listener and convey the emotions of a story not simply the facts. • Proven ability to identify and originate stories, report accurately, take direction and meet deadlines. • Ability to work on both short and long-term deadline stories, simultaneously. • Ability to evaluate and analyze reporting and facts to frame stories with strong narrative lines or compelling findings, projected impact, context and scope. • Demonstrated capacity to use public documents, Internet research and other reporting methods to provide independent material to inform stories. • Creativity in using web, radio and social media platforms to convey information, engage listeners and users and to utilize the capacity of unique platforms.
Educational Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent field required. A higher degree is preferred.
