WAMU 88.5, the leading public radio station for NPR news and information in the greater Washington area, is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications.
As a member of WAMU's senior executive team, the Director is responsible for developing and executing a marketing strategy. Must show experience directing/supporting/aligning every component of an integrated marketing program including: public information (including print and outdoor/transit advertising), public outreach and community relations, publication production, graphic design, and media relations. Strong candidates will present a forward looking sensibility of web/digital being a differentiated channel of content & community engagement, as well as an augmentation/extension of broadcast content and, a distribution platform. Supervisory/Team Leader experience a plus.
Highly desirable if candidate has promoted diverse topics and “product lines” especially within a single company, with demonstrated ability to scale up or down in project size/magnitude—skill sets to include project planning/development/management, budgeting, oversight of creative, media buying (including barter), merchandising and ability to coordinate with other departments in support of integrated promotions, messaging (including through social media) and activities/events.
Must be able to analyze/interpret WAMU’s market and brand distinction (using formal research and other means), and envision/implement strategies to grow awareness for WAMU’s five content channels (including wamu.org) and its community impact, with measurable results. Must be able to articulate and maintain internal image/brand awareness conventions; regulate use of logo and brand. An understanding of "firewall" issues relevant to a news organization and professional journalists is necessary.
Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or related field, or at least 8 years’ experience in marketing and/or public relations. Excellent copywriting and editing skills a must, as are strong public speaking skills and the ability to serve as a public point of contact. Familiarity with Public Broadcasting is necessary.
Preferred requirements include advanced studies in marketing/PR and experience with digital/social media. Evidence of strong press contacts in Washington media or ability to build press contacts a plus.
