POSITION SUMMARY:

Manage all aspects of music programming for Wisconsin Public Radio.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  1. Serve as primary supervisor for music related staffing, including music hosts, librarian, programmers and producers, with coordination and oversight of regional music programming, fostering a collaborative music team.
  2. Prepare music department budget.  Recommend and monitor expenditures. 
  3. Serve as member of program management group, assisting with scheduling and selecting new programming for WPR.
  4. Lead digital initiatives for music programming.
  5. Responsible and accountable for undertaking all supervisory duties including providing timely work performance feedback, addressing issues as they arise, coaching, creating work plans, and  providing a formal written performance evaluation annually. 
  6. Responsible for articulating and creating goals each year for staff members/direct reports that are tied to the WPR strategic and/or operational plan.
  7. Program music service and host music programs when needed.
  8. Oversee all locally produced special music programs including but not limited to Sunday Afternoon Live, the Neale-Silva Young Artist’s competition and Music from Wisconsin.  Co-produce live concerts as needed.
  9. Conduct regular air checks and help mentor new and existing talent. 
  10. Assist in establishing and overseeing guidelines for music selection, making use of research data, input from staff and other available information.
  11. Take an active part in acquisition and identification of new recordings and syndicated programs for broadcast.  Serve as principal contact with record companies and other programming sources.
  12. Participate in on-air fund raising, donor cultivation and other special promotional events.
  13. Develop and implement ideas for special outreach projects, as well as continuing on-and off-air promotional activities for WPR’s music Department.

  15. Respond to listener queries and comments
  16. Demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships and interactions.
  17. Encourage and support inclusive, diverse working climate by promoting engagement with diverse perspectives and experiences in work product and organizational decision-making, including hiring.  Promote professional development for self and staff members on conflict resolution, intercultural communication, dialogue and deliberation, and multicultural awareness.
  18. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Skill, comfort and demeanor to effectively and productively manage diverse music staff and music genres

Aural acuity to discern and correct variations in broadcast quality

Ability to operate broadcast board

Voice quality that is compelling and that meets state-wide network broadcasting standards

Ability to work non-standard hours during events, pledge drives and so forth

Coordinate an audience-focused approach in making decisions and participating in program management group activities

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree required
  2. Minimum five to seven years’ managerial experience
  3. Significant music programming and announcing experience
  4. Superior oral and written communication skills
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively engage diverse perspectives and experiences in work product and in organizational interactions, including communication and decision-making

 

DESIRABLE (but not required) QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience leading music programming in a state-wide network or a large market or with a large staff
  2. Demonstrated understanding of opportunities for music on other distribution platforms.
  3. Demonstrated skill at coming up with innovative approaches of expanding and engaging new audiences with music
