Overview:

New York Public Radio seeks a Director of Special Budgets and Analysis (SBA) to lead the financial planning and analysis for WNYC program initiatives.  The Director also provides project and fiscal management of special funding budgets.  S/he will be the primary liaison between Programming and the Finance and Revenue Departments. S/he will be a report to the Chief Content Officer with a dotted line reporting to the Senior Director of Finance.

This role is a key collaborator with the VP, Content Development and staff in the programming, development, underwriting, business development, general counsel, finance and digital departments, as well as external production partners and distribution partners.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage separate project budgets based on strategic plan, business development, fundraising and operating needs that reflect collaboration with and input from key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as Programming’s primary contact for Development, Underwriting, and Business Development staff for fundraising proposals, grant budgets, grant reporting, partnerships and content development and distribution deals.  Contribute to strategy and tactics as appropriate/needed.
  • Manage project budget planning with other departments for overlapping, enterprise projects.
  • Review all associated project expenses incurred throughout the fiscal year for accuracy and completeness and report progress and variances monthly to key stakeholders.
  • Responsible for the proper accounting of all revenue, expenses and expenditures and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. 
  • Establish and sustain processes and information systems to flag issues proactively and ensure expenses and deliverables are managed effectively, on-time and within budget. 
  • Liaise between the programming department heads and the Finance Department on the budget and reforecast processes to ensure accuracy and transparency in the results.  Complete variation analysis for the Chief Content Officer, identifying opportunities and risks.
  • Foster a collaborative relationship with the Finance Department to ensure alignment of key financial information; policy and practices; and financial systems and management.
  • Generate monthly financial reports to key stakeholders.
  • Prepare financial models for ad-hoc projects.
  • Monitor compliance with the terms of grants, partner agreements, funding requirements (including federal), and other policies.
  • Attend and participate in fundraising meetings with development and underwriting staff and program management meetings.
  • Provide clear and effective communication to Programming and Finance staff.
  • Collaborate with Finance to establish and implement effective systems and processes.
Qualifications:
  • Must be a sharp thinker and leader who is a self-starter that proactively looks for solutions.
  • Posses the energy, entrepreneurial drive, creativity, flexibility, results-orientation, and tolerance for ambiguity that is necessary to lead a complex organization to a significantly higher level of success.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Make sound financial decisions;
    • Analyze and manipulate raw data;
    • Negotiate agreements;
    • Achieve success while navigating complex goals and partnerships;
    • Articulate new ideas, processes and financial or business matters to a creative team;
    • Effectively manage competing priorities and multiple pieces/projects simultaneously;
    • Create and manage multiple, complex budgets through ongoing project development and evolution;
    • Develop collaborative relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to meet program goals and find solutions to challenges as they arise.
  • 7-10 years public accounting and/or private accounting preferred, comprehensive understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles required.
  • 5 years non-profit experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in a financial business leadership position.
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Expert proficiency with Excel required.
  • A quick study – thrives in a steep learning-curve environment.
  • Familiarity with and experience in media and public radio preferred.
