Overview:

The Maintenance Engineer provides technical support and preventative maintenance for the radio broadcast and production plant including, but not limited to, the station’s audio routing and mixing platform (SAS, AXIA) and release path infrastructure as well as all associated broadcast audio devices in the signal path from microphone to recording and broadcast destinations. 

 

If assigned to the morning Maintenance Engineer shift, this role will provide technical support for all programming on the air at the time (WNYC-AM air, WNYC-FM air, WQXR-FM air, NJPR station air and Takeaway national uplink) including pre-checks of all control surfaces and related systems (SAS, AXIA, DAVID, NewsBoss, PhoneBox, release paths, etc.) prior to shows going on air, setting up backup equipment and control room/studio for emergency use, provide response and resolution to broadcast technical problems and interface with the Master Control engineer on duty and all technical staff.

 

Responsibilities:
  • Respond to maintenance requests of equipment repair and provides any technical assistance necessary to the broadcast and/or production of NYPR audio
  • As assigned  to maintenance engineer support, provide first check and preparation for all on-air control rooms and studios in use to insure proper operation during morning shows
  • As assigned to technical support provide first line of technical assistance to NYPR originated network shows as well as NYPR’s local productions Duties would include, but not be limited to:
    • assuring connectivity to the NPR Network Operations Center
    • providing emergency technical help on all SAS consoles, DAVID technical operation, PhoneBox operation, signal routing and emergency re-routing and Streamer technical issues 
  • Maintain organization and safe conditions in the shop and other technical areas to all installations of production equipment 
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures as set by NYPR Engineering practices
  • Document solutions to technical problems, and maintain these for reference
  • Maintain inventory of spare equipment, and stock of parts needed for repairs
  • Facilitate repairs of equipment sent out to a manufacturer or third party repair center 
  • Report on necessary equipment or new technology recommended for shop or facility use
  • Acquire and maintain an in-depth knowledge of NYPR operations and its technical facilities; especially as these relate to broadcast audio
  • Research, as requested, new technologies for engineering use
  • Participate in training seminars, classes, workshops, etc. recommended by NYPR
  • As assigned, operate Control Rooms, Master Control Room for all activities needed; i.e. On-Air, recording and production etc.
    • Comply with all NYPR and Engineering Dept. policies and guidelines
  • This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods; requires bending, reaching and lifting of up to (50 pounds)
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed, including evenings, weekends, early morning, overnights and may be required to be on-call at times
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with Standard Audio Engineering practices - required
  • Recording or Broadcast Studio and Technology Experience-required
  • Knowledge and understanding of current recording studio practices -required
  • In-depth understanding of electronics and electrical engineering -required
  • Experience with radio RF systems – a plus
  • Familiarity with digital audio workstations and practice - preferred
  • Knowledge of computer technology - preferred
  • Ability to work in a self-motivated manner and deliver work on-time and on-spec - required
  • Experience with Auto CAD - required
  • Very strong team orientation - required
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technical and broadcast equipment at a high level; demonstrated ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly - required
  • Audio Engineering Degree-preferred
  • EE degree-preferred
  • Computer Technology A+ Certification- preferred
  • Three or more years of equivalent experience - required
