SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Vice President of Development & Marketing is responsible for leading and managing the station’s revenue departments: Membership, Major Gifts, Corporate Underwriting, Institutional Gifts, Sponsorships, Event Revenue and Grants. The VP leads the development team in the design and implementation of an integrated fundraising, marketing, communications and outreach strategy to meet the revenue needs of the organization. In partnership with the President/CEO, the VP helps manage the Board Development Committee, working closely with our Trustees. This member of NHPR’s senior management team will partner with the President/CEO, Trustees, NHPR staff members, volunteers and other constituents across the state as needed, successfully leveraging all resources to implement fundraising plans, enhance the NHPR brand locally and strengthen the public radio community nationally.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Oversee Membership Program to increase new member participation, boost donor retention, ensure sustained giving program targets are reached and increase overall gift revenue. Lead staff to maximize productivity, creativity and financial results via direct mail, electronic mail and on-air fundraising efforts, ensuring that all communications reflect strategy and guidelines. Develop and implement new strategies for revenue generation, including web-based initiatives.
- Provide strategic oversight of Major Gifts Program including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship as well as goal setting and record keeping. Identify opportunities for special campaigns, such as operating, special project, endowment, capital and station acquisition initiatives.
- Oversee NHPR’s Corporate Underwriting Program and ensure that staff has the tools and training required to secure a broad base of broadcast and digital underwriters.
- Guide NHPR’s Planned Giving Program, keeping donors and prospects informed of NHPR’s needs now and in the future, and encouraging bequests, charitable gift annuities and other planned giving vehicles. Oversee development of planned giving marketing strategies to families, trust and estate attorneys and investment advisors.
- Oversee Foundation, Corporate and Government Grants Program. Manage Grants Officer and work closely with programming staff to identify special project and other funding opportunities. Ensure grant compliance, including reporting, for all institutional and restricted gifts.
- Participate in NHPR’s strategic planning process, identify fundraising and marketing implications and lead development team’s implementation.
- Serve as liaison with NPR on collaborative fundraising initiatives.
- Develop an integrated marketing strategy utilizing digital and traditional means to leverage listener loyalty and build awareness of NHPR’s outstanding public service programming.
- Oversee creation and execution of special events and projects to maximize visibility and revenue. Work with President/CEO to secure corporate sponsorships for special projects and other initiatives as appropriate.
- Lead the development and implementation of all public relations and community outreach work, with particular responsibility for development of signature positioning activities in key constituent areas to build community awareness and deepen listener loyalty.
- Develop public relations materials and communications to enhance NHPR’s image with members and nonmembers. Help develop branded thank you gifts to promote fundraising programs and increase brand visibility.
- Recruit, manage, and evaluate the development team consistent with NHPR’s values. Guide the professional development of staff and ensure that they stay abreast of trends that may impact fundraising efforts.
- Oversee fundraising recordkeeping systems ensuring data accuracy, donor privacy, acknowledgement and recognition and timely reporting.
- Work with President/CEO and VP Finance and Operations to develop annual NHPR budget, and develop and manage departmental budget.
- Represent NHPR to the public radio community nationally and maintain strong relationships with relevant organizations.
- Attend public radio conferences and meetings, as required.
- Participate in station-wide initiatives, as required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The qualified VP of Development & Marketing candidate will have 7 or more years of relevant development & marketing experience in a mature nonprofit environment with a strong track record of effective team leadership and collaboration. He or she will have experience managing budgets and be able to interpret and act upon financial information. He or she will have strong data analysis skills, knowledge of best practices for maximizing performance in a membership/direct marketing campaign and the ability to translate research into strategy. Familiarity with audience research is desirable. A demonstrated ability to initiate and cultivate key donor and opinion leader relationships is important; familiarity with the New Hampshire philanthropic community is a plus. The candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Office, familiar with database management (knowledge of Raiser’s Edge is beneficial) and have excellent computer-based analytical skills. Bachelors’ degree is required.

- Passion and intuition for journalism and radio, a keen eye and ear for communication trends and the listener’s needs and wants, and a constant awareness of competitors
- High standards of performance, commitment and integrity for themselves and their colleagues; comfortable delegating as well as rolling up their sleeves to help get the job done.
