The primary responsibility of the Associate Director of Development is to identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit donors to secure philanthropic gifts in support of Arizona Public Media (AZPM). The Associate Director of Development spends the vast majority of his/her time regularly visiting individual donors and corporate and foundation executives to build relationships and ask for support of AZPM. The Associate Director of Development assists in the preparation and implementation of the AZPM annual development plan.

The Associate Director of Development serves as a member of the UA Development Team. The position is managed jointly by AZPM and the University of Arizona Development Office which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation (UAF).

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and manage a portfolio of 50 to 75 assigned donors and 75 to 100 assigned prospects. Cultivate, solicit, and secure major gifts of $25,000 or more (including pledges of $5,000 or more per year for five years) and leadership annual gifts of at least $1,000.

Each month, be off campus in Tucson and southern Arizona the equivalent of eight work days personally visiting at least 10 major donors and at least 15 to 20 prospects. The UA development program expects all development officers to meet annual targets for personal visits (150 minimum) and solicitation of major gifts (20 minimum).

Strategically involve the General Manager of AZPM and the UAF in the cultivation and solicitation of top donor prospects.

Schedule appointments with donors and prospects to build relationships with them and to discuss and assess their: (1) personal interests that may correlate with AZPM fundraising priorities and gift opportunities; (2) propensity and desire to be philanthropic in support of AZPM, and; (3) financial capacity to make major, planned, and leadership annual gifts.

Effectively and enthusiastically present the case for philanthropic support. Share information about giving, naming, and sponsorship opportunities. Explain the various ways donors can make gifts. When appropriate or requested, write major gift proposals and present them to donor prospects. In addition to cultivating and soliciting major gifts, ask individuals to make leadership annual gifts and be sustaining members of AZPM leadership annual giving donor clubs. Secure gift commitments.

Assist in the stewardship and public recognition of donors. Write "thank you" notes and letters to donors who make new gifts and multi-year gift commitments. Recognize donors publicly in ways that are appropriate for a public media organization.

Assist in working with the AZPM Community Advisory Board (CAB) to recruit community leaders to assist in the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors. Assist in providing leadership, training, and coordination for the involvement of CAB members and other volunteers in the personal solicitation of gifts.

Write and develop compelling, accurate fundraising communications, case statements, fact sheets, gift proposals, development-related articles for newsletters, etc.

Regularly monitor fundraising progress reports and statistics to help ensure that AZPM is on track to reach its fundraising goals and targets.

Other duties as assigned. 

Miminum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree AND two (2) years of successful professional experience in development, communications, sales, or another related field.

Possession of a valid Arizona driver's license upon employment. 

Preferred Qualifications

* Successful experience in recruiting, training, and engaging board members and other volunteers in fundraising.
* Successful experience working in public broadcasting, film and television industry, news media, and/or higher education.
* Strong personal interest in public television and radio programming. Ability to effectively and accurately converse with current and prospective donors about the content of AZPM programs in a manner that does not compromise AZPM's editorial integrity policy.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively represent AZPM.
* Excellent writing, speaking, and listening skills (demonstrated competence in the English language and grammar).
* Excellent time management and organizational skills.
* Excellent initiative, including the ability to make cold calls and get first appointments with donors and prospects.
* Excellent working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, charitable remainder trusts, bequests in a will or living trust, charitable gift annuities, etc.
* Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with donors, AZPM colleagues, and colleagues on the UA Development Team.
* Ability to effectively communicate the AZPM mission, strategic plan and goals, and case for philanthropic support.
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
* Ability to inspire cooperation and participation.
* Ability to motivate, coach, and supervise volunteers for maximum performance.
* Ability to make good decisions and to exercise good judgment and discretion.
* Ability to maintain donor and AZPM confidentiality.
* Ability to understand and follow AZPM, UA, and UAF policies and procedures.
* Ability to work within established budgets.
* Ability to operate basic office equipment.
