WNYC is hiring a political reporter for its New Jersey Public Radio service to cover Gov. Chris Christie - his gubernatorial race in 2013, his performance in office and, if it happens, his run for the White House in 2016. The ideal candidate will be a terrific storyteller who loves politics as sport and has the ability to juggle in-depth enterprise and daily deadlines to produce a steady flow of exclusive reports. He or she will demonstrate a willingness to experiment with new reporting tools and new ways of telling stories on every platform – the radio, the Web and social media – and have a track record of producing compelling stories that engage our audience.  This position reports to the Managing Editor, New Jersey Public Radio, and is based in New Jersey, where NJPR has offices in Trenton and Montclair.

The reporter will:

  • Report enterprising features, news exclusives and day-to-day coverage about New Jersey politics and the performance of the New Jersey governor as a candidate and an elected official
  • Craft compelling radio features
  • Produce quick turnaround reports for digital media
  • Produce exacting live news reports for social media and radio
  • Make regular appearances on WNYC talk shows
  • Represent WNYC credibly on other media platforms

Qualifications:

  • Five years professional journalism experience; radio reporting experience preferred
  • Track record of producing enterprise reporting with impact
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Lives in New Jersey or willing to move there
  • Owns and drives a car
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and concepts as necessary
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
  • Knowledge of U.S., New Jersey and N.Y.C.-area politics, policy and data sources preferred
  • Political reporting experience preferred
  • A can-do, solutions-oriented attitude

  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds
  • Use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods  including but not limited to; Microsoft Office software, internet based applications for internal and external communications
  • Affinity for New York Public Radio; WNYC and/or WQXR content and mission a plus
  • Compliance with WNYC/WQXR policies and guidelines
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed
