Director, Business Development
WNYC Radio
New York Public Radio -- home to WNYC, WQXR and award-winning national programming such as Radiolab and On The Media -- seeks a committed, creative, enterprising professional with proven success in building new business opportunities that cross traditional and digital media to join our team as the Director, Business Development. As a key member of NYPR’s Business Development and Digital Media team, you will play a leading role in driving the strategy for increased revenue, audience and impact for NYPR and its growing portfolio of properties, which includes a line of digital products, cross-media distribution outlets, and new and existing program franchises.
You will be accountable for:
- Working with internal constituents to define and execute revenue growth strategies
- Sourcing and evaluating new business opportunities
- Negotiating with partners both inside and outside the public radio system
- Creating budgets and business models
- Conceiving and finalizing deal terms and monitoring success metrics against goals
- Helping develop a culture of rigorous business strategy within the context of a mission-driven, not-for-profit media company
You are:
- Demonstrably entrepreneurial, proactive, scrappy and resourceful
- Fluent in the concepts, terminology and business landscape of both modern (digital) and traditional (radio) media
- Good at building financial models in Excel, business plans and presentations in PowerPoint, and good at knowing those tools’ limitations
- Described by former coworkers as somebody who develops relationships easily, moves freely across organizational boundaries and knows how to lead without formal authority
- Equally comfortable working with software developers, radio producers, senior executives, vendors, talent, ad sales teams, marketing and audience-development professionals, board members, donors and many others
- Adept at managing uncertainty, rapid change and ambiguity
- Connected to the media and technology communities in NYC and beyond
- Seasoned, but not senior – you have 4-6 years of experience
- Committed to NYPR’s mission and objectives
- Willing to travel, as needed
- Optionally an MBA

- The intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the senior leadership team, colleagues, staff and external partners and provide motivation at all levels of an organization.
- Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds
- Use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods including but not limited to; email, internet based applications for internal and external communications.
- Affinity for New York Public Radio; WNYC and/or WQXR content and mission a plus
