The Senior Producer for NHPR's Word of Mouth is responsible for managing the daily production, promotion, digital presence and long-term programming strategy of the show.  The Senior Producer manages the Host, Producer, Associate Producer and volunteers and is responsible for the budget and other business functions on behalf of the show.  This position reports to the Program Director. 

Responsibilities include:

  • With overall responsibility for daily production of Word of Mouth, supervises editorial process and tracks production of all segments from conception to completion.
  • Generates segment ideas for the daily show, program blog and podcasts.
  • Produces segments, books guests, writes and edits daily scripts, and creates sound-rich programming elements.
  • Writes, edits and post-produces audio and written content for the show and its website
  • Identifies available content from independent producers and online sources and negotiates payment with contract producers and contributors.
  • Plans for and oversees production of rebroadcasted material, such as the weekend show and podcasts compiled from the strongest segments of the daily program.
  • Collaborates with Program Manager on developing strategic plan and goals for the show and leads implementation. 
  • Leads effort to enhance the show's digital presence, developing and executing the social media strategy, in collaboration with Digital team.
  • Manages Host, Producer, Associate Producer, freelance producers, contributors and volunteers.  Participates in staffing decisions and writes and conducts annual staff performance evaluations.
  • Manages Word of Mouth annual budget.
  • Represents Word of Mouth in managerial, news and programming meetings and activities.
  • Collaborates with NHPR editorial team on special projects and series as appropriate. 
  • Participates in on-air fundraising and sponsorship activities as needed. 
  • Responsible for the editorial and public “voice” of Word of Mouth in promotional and social media networks. 
  • Generates on-air, online, social and traditional media strategies for marketing Word of Mouth to existing and potential audiences

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years of experience in production of radio programming, preferably in public broadcasting. 
  • Exceptional communication, writing, editing and interviewing skills.
  • Excellent editorial judgment and understanding of public radio core values.
  • A minimum of two years of experience managing employees and coaching talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality work under strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated audio editing, production skills and excellent ear for quality production.
  • Experience with Adobe Audition or other audio editing programs, broadcast automation. systems like Audio Vault and HTML and image software such as Photoshop or Fireworks. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a team orientation and ability to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve desired goals
  • Knowledge of relevant FCC rules and regulations 

B.A. in relevant field or equivalent experience
