Job Title: Lead Technology Officer
Summary: This is a position reporting to the COO and is responsible for overseeing the radio operations/traffic, information technology and engineering departments. The individual selected will build upon the organization’s existing radio operations, engineering and IT criteria guidelines, policies and operation standards.
Accountabilities:
Radio Operations/Traffic
- Oversees the daily set up and operation of the radio station’s automation (ENCO) and the public radio distribution systems (Public Radio Satellite System and Content Depot). This includes, but is not limited to continuous monitoring of these systems, responding to and correcting problems when they occur and anticipating problems before they occur.
- Oversees the work with engineering and IT departments to address the overall technical needs of the radio station and to correct and respond to problems with the automation and public radio distribution system.
- Communicate with the Chief Operating Officer, programming staff, news staff, engineering and IT on any technical, operations and production related matters.
- Work closely with the Directors, and other programming staff to update program and other changes to the automation system (ENCO) as the need arises.
- Oversees the insertion of daily and weekly programs and promos into the automation system.
- Other technical, operations and production duties and responsibilities as needed.
- Participate in all radio fund raising activities.
- Other duties as assigned
Engineering
- Coordinates with other departments to provide the engineering services needed and advise them on broadcast matters.
- Supervises the broadcast operations for over-the air, cable, radio and television operations of WABE-FM and WPBA-TV.
- Oversees staff that is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of all transmitters, transmitter links, microwave, and satellite up-links/downs-links for the station.
- Oversees all maintenance logs for all transmitting equipment of WPBA-TV and WABE-FM.
- Oversees staff in the formulation, and responsible for the installation, of the technical facility systems renovation for the station.
- Supervises the spare parts inventory process.
Information Technology (IT)
- Provide ongoing organizational needs analysis for the IT department including execution strategies, personnel alignment efficiencies and optimization goals.
- Create and review project plans and coordinate project activity.
- Oversee staff to manage network, backup, security, telephone and user help systems.
- Develop, interpret and implement organizational IT goals, policies, and procedures.
- Develop computer information resources, providing for data security and control, strategic computing, and disaster recovery.
- Consult with users, management, vendors, and technicians to assess computing needs and system requirements.
- Stay abreast of advances in technology.
- Meet with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors, and others, to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.
- Provide users with technical support for computer problems.
- Evaluate data processing and IT infrastructure proposals to assess project feasibility and requirements.
Management
- Manages the staff within Radio Operations/Traffic, Engineering and IT.
- Oversees the budget for Radio Operations/Traffic, Engineering and IT.
- Participates in fund drives and other station events as needed.
- Develop processes, policies and procedures as needed to keep an effective and efficient organization for the station’s IT, Engineering and Operations/Traffic efforts.
- Other duties as assigned by station management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree in from an accredited college or university and or related equivalent work experience.
Must have at least five (5) years of experience in broadcasting of which three (3) have been in the supervisory capacity with an extensive background and proven track record in either radio operations, broadcast information technology systems along with general engineering understanding.
Must have demonstrated experience and understanding of ENCO.
Must be able to handle a variety of activities, work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Must have excellent organizational and managerial skills as well as skills in news writing, editing, interviewing, production communication and interpersonal skills.
Must have excellent knowledge of NPR’s newsmagazine clocks and how best to utilize local news breaks to ensure local and national sound and quality uniformity.
Public Radio experience preferred.
