Overview:

The Executive Editor directs the day-of report of the WNYC Newsroom across all platforms: radio, web, and social media. 

This editor, a senior leader in the Newsroom, establishes the daily newsplan in consultation with the Morning Edition producer and the editors who supervise beat reporters. He or she manages the evolving plan throughout the day, a task that includes: coordinating with the Executive Producer and the Morning Edition and All Things Considered producers in judging whether stories will be pursued by producers or reporters; assigning reporters to stories, in consultation with their supervising editors; attaching editors to stories; setting filing expectations and deadlines; managing and editing newscasts; conducting the morning and afternoon news meetings; and making the hand-off to the evening Senior Editor. He or she also supervises general assignment reporters.

The Executive Editor, WNYC News is the Newsroom’s primary point of contact with the digital team’s Executive Editor in discussions about homepage presentation and social media treatment of news. The editor is responsible for assuring that the Newsroom’s radio and online day-of content has been reviewed for accuracy, clarity and style before it is broadcast or published. The editor monitors wires, other news outlets and social media for news developments and responds in a manner that keeps WNYC competitive.  In addition, the editor aims to continuously improve the processes of newsgathering, editing and communication in the Newsroom, and the Newsroom’s collaboration with other departments at WNYC, in the interest of building a dynamic, contemporary news report. The Executive Editor reports to the Vice President for News.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of professional journalists
  • Managing a daily news report
  • Making news assignments
  • Attaching editors to stories
  • Setting filing expectations and deadlines
  • Editing audio and text on deadline.
  • Web production and publishing
  • Monitoring news wires and competition
  • Active engagement with social media as an editorial tool
  • Working with the data news team and digital staff on advancing multimedia presentation of WNYC reporting

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of seven years professional journalism experience, including three years as an editor or supervising producer
  • An established track record of collaborative leadership.
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking 
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
  • This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • The intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, self-confidence and interpersonal skills to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff at New York Public Radio
