OVERVIEW:

The NYPR Assistant Director - Engineering Operations is responsible for the leadership and administration of the company’s Broadcast Engineering personnel as well as the shared responsibilities with the Director of Engineering of technical planning, execution and operation of the broadcast systems and operational budget for the department.  The position will serve in part as a technology strategist who will possess a thorough technical acumen of technical trends within broadcast systems and work closely with the Director of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer to identify and capitalize on broadcast technology solutions that will advance the interests of NYPR.  The position requires not only extensive experience in engineering but also proven experience in managing technical personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage Broadcast Engineers, Senior Broadcast Engineers and per diem engineering staff:  set goals and priorities, manage performance and evaluate employees within the Engineering Department.  With CTO and HR department, recruit to fill positions as needed.
  • In coordination with the Director of Engineering outline, submit and regularly monitor the Engineering Department annual budget based on Company-wide goals.  Initiate, approve and recommend purchases based on this outline and goals throughout the course of the fiscal year.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the station’s broadcast facility to ensure smooth and efficient operations to guarantee the highest level of quality to the listener. This work may entail detailed technical work inside the station’s broadcast automation and routing systems.
  • Research, design, implement and train personnel in new and existing equipment/technology/procedures for broadcast transmission and systems.
  • Participate as needed in Senior Staff leadership meetings, provide technical expertise, input and progress reports.
  • Document and maintain engineering operational policies and procedures.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage daily operations of multiple live broadcast studios, required
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage technical personnel in a live broadcast setting, required
  • Excellent judgment and ability to effectively handle complex issues under pressure or during emergency situations, required
  • Experience in preparing and monitoring operation budgets and planning for capital improvements, required
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills, preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on projects to completion, required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, required
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences, preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate technical discipline, required
  • Advanced degree/certifications, preferred
  • Minimum five years progressively responsible engineering experience focusing on engineering personnel management and budget management, required
  • Knowledge of current broadcast, production, and IT technologies and trends, required
