Position Description

 Summary

The Managing Producer works with the News Director to achieve Nevada Public Radio’s objectives for local and regional news service on News 88.9 KNPR. The Managing Producer oversees the shaping and production of KNPR’s State of Nevada—Nevada Public Radio’s flagship news and public affairs program, serving more than 50,000 listeners (nearly half of KNPR’s entire weekly audience). The Managing Producer has strong news judgment, and strong instincts for the shape, proportion and flow of the program; working to ensure that the entire KNPR's State of Nevada team is producing radio and online content that is current, relevant, accurate, engaging, and technically sound.

The Managing Producer oversees and has responsibility for workflow and deployment of staff resources associated with the production of KNPR’s State of Nevada. While the Managing Producer will advise on formal matters of supervision and evaluation of NVPR News staff (including disciplinary action, administrative matters, and budget-related issues); however, these areas remain the responsibility of the News Director.

The Managing Producer also works to ensure that elements of KNPR’s State of Nevada, as well as relevant syndicated content (regional and national), air during NVPR’s drive-time broadcast stream;  ensures that KNPR News content elements are integrated and cross-promoted on-air, on knpr.org, and in KNPR News social media. The Managing Producer is responsible for special assignments that require additional planning and/or working with external partners.

This position reports to the News Director.

Duties and Essential Job Functions

  • As part of a small team, the Managing Producer carries out the full range of duties tasked to the KNPR's State of Nevada production team, as needed—taking on whatever must be done to ensure that KNPR’s State of Nevada is relevant, engaging, up-to-date, has a diverse menu of news content, and that the program offers faithful coverage of Nevada and the surrounding region.
  • In conference with the News Director, oversees and coordinates the efforts of KNPR's State of Nevada team members to maximize the service-value of the program, while adhering to the highest journalistic standards.
  • Runs editorial meetings as needed ensuring that post-mortems, pitch sessions, and other group discussions are inclusive, thorough, focused and efficient.
  • In conference with News Director, follows up with teammates to ensure that assignments are executed well, and to ensure that segments and online content are thoroughly researched, well-written, and have strong authoritative sources/guests.
  • Works diligently to ensure that there is a coherent strategy in place to create lively, engaging content both in broadcast and online.
  • Takes the necessary corrective steps—including editing, additional booking, and killing segments when they do not and cannot meet the standards of the program.
  • Keeps up to date on community news, government, business, arts, politics, education, health care, and other relevant local and regional issues.
  • Updates and coordinates coverage and assignments throughout the day and during off-hours as needed, adapting quickly to the changing news environment, and adjusting assignments when necessary.
  • Gives assignments and clearly delineates the nature and focus of every segment—working with the team to map out core questions and necessary guests, and then memorializing those summary details for future reference.
  • Ensures that KNPR's State of Nevada team is maintaining KNPR News databases and directories (including Sharepoint, contacts rolodex, online calendars, futures list, knpr.org web summaries/stories/newsblog, and social media feeds as assigned), and adhering to standards and formats for interview scripts.
  • Evaluates workflow, and assignments, and coordinates with teammates to ensure that teammates are anticipating important stories and segments, and working ahead whenever possible.
  • Ensures that KNPR's State of Nevada team members are present in the KNPR newsroom during established work hours, and that individual teammates are meeting the productivity requirements, and takes corrective action as needed, in conference with the News Director.
  • Present in the KNPR newsroom during established work hours, and works additional hours as needed from the station or remotely to fulfill the objectives of KNPR’s news coverage efforts while adhering to strict standards of journalistic integrity and ethics.
  • Communicates effectively and efficiently with Programming and News teams.
  • Responds appropriately and proactively to feedback from News Director.
  • Works with internal and external teams to execute specific projects including partnerships with independent producers, public radio stations and other media or community partners.
  • Participates in fundraising activities as necessary.
  • Manages confidential information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Must possess the ability to develop fresh and creative coverage approaches in broadcast and digital platforms, in shaping segments, angles, guests, and core questions for a wide range of coverage areas; ability to make quick command decisions; ability to effectively execute multiple assignments on deadline; ability to work inclusively with a diverse staff; ability to set news coverage priorities in a fast-changing news environment; ability to consistently work well with others and to inspire, motivate and lead the KNPR News team; ability to work collegially and creatively with staff and colleagues at all levels of experience; ability to respond to changing priorities; proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at Nevada Public Radio and within the public broadcasting system; ability to generate original ideas, and to think creatively about how to communicate them.

Must possess the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and personnel seamlessly; ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports; ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Must have ability to maintain constructive relationships, demonstrate respect for everyone and have experience working with diverse populations. Requires the ability to take initiative to identify and act on potential problems.  Must have ability to deal constructively with conflict and resolve conflicts directly by actively promoting and gaining cooperation from others; able to make consistent decisions that resolve problems appropriately.

Requirements

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism/Media Studies or equivalent work experience; five years experience in the field of daily news production, radio, television and/or print; two years experience at management level preferred
  • Experience in radio journalism preferred—as a reporter, producer, editor or host of talk, public affairs or news magazine programming for public or commercial broadcast
  • Experience in maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including objectivity, balance and fairness; significant experience providing work direction or supervisory experience; must be able to conduct phone and in-person interviews
  • Experience with digital audio editing systems; experience operating technical broadcast equipment preferred (including mixing console, microphones, phone multi-line hybrid system, audio storage and automation systems); experience with web journalism preferred; background reporting on western states issues preferred (politics, economics and culture with an emphasis on Southern Nevada); demonstrated computer proficiency in Outlook and Windows based computer software; experience with databases
  • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment; demonstrated writing and communication skills; demonstrated skills in sourcing program segments and conducting research, including use of search and social media tools
  • Any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position may suffice as required experience and qualifications
  • Critical thinking, basic math to include adding, subtracting, multiplication and division; ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondences and emails; must possess strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines effectively
  • Strong expertise in the implementation of systems and practices associated with broadcast journalism, online journalism, and demonstrable skill in the production of a daily news talk program
  • Valid NV driver's license and proof of insurance
