Radio Talk Show Host/Producer

WXXI

The Radio Talk Show Host is primarily responsible for WXXI’s daily public affairs program, 1370 Connection. The Radio Talk Show Host provides an interactive forum for the productive exchange of ideas and opinions on issues and events, through civil discourse with experts and decision-makers, to help build audience size, loyalty and membership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Engage listeners in daily on-air conversations with guests on topics of interest and impact.
2. Working with the WXXI News Director, schedule guests and determine topics for programs.
3. Facilitate knowledgeable discussion via thorough research of subject matter. 
4. Extend the daily interactive forum across all WXXI media and services, including radio, television, wxxi.org, Facebook, Twitter and other social media.
5. Work collaboratively with internal and external partners on special projects such as citizen engagement initiatives, election night coverage, and major breaking news events.
6. Participate in WXXI membership drives and various station activities.
7. Other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• B.A. degree, preferably in journalism.
• Advanced degree desired.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• 2 to 4 years professional experience in broadcast journalism with demonstrated knowledge of local government, political issues, and news contacts.
• Talk show experience a necessity.
• Public radio background advantageous.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Demonstrated skill in editing, producing, writing, and reporting.
• The ability to read, hear and speak English in a pleasant and conversational manner.
• Demonstrated aptitude for interviewing in a concise, inclusive and interesting manner.
• Background and interest in a wide variety of topics and areas.
• Ability to handle listener calls and questions.
• Ability to generate interesting and topical subjects and guests and present them in an entertaining and informative manner.
• Familiarity with Western New York preferred.
• Ability to work a deadline environment that requires great attention to detail.
