Director of Foundation & Government Relations

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Foundation and Government Relations' primary responsibility is to oversee the submission and management of foundation and government grant proposals. S/he also conducts prospect research and leads research efforts to inform program strategy, manages relationships with foundation and government agencies, and works collaboratively with external partners and staff across all organizational units to develop innovative programming and educational initiatives that support the organization's mission and fund-raising goals
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Research and identify viable grant and funding opportunities from foundations as well as state and federal funding agencies
•Manage an assigned portfolio of funders and prospects; cultivate and build relationships with foundations and government agencies with the goal of securing face-to-face meetings and invitations to submit proposals
•Develop innovative programming and educational initiatives that support fund-raising goals and further the mission of CPBI, including the development of business plans and related research from which grant requests can be successfully created
•Write, edit and proof grant proposals, case statements and other solicitation materials
•Manage the stewardship of grants through proper reporting, gift acknowledgements and follow-up communication
•Compile requirements for grant submissions and ensure grant deadlines, guidelines, format and design set by funding agencies are met
•Develop and maintain a master listing/calendar of all pertinent federal, state and local public sector grant opportunities
•Track all submitted proposals and prepare reports as required
•Assist in developing methods for ensuring compliance with grant requirements and evaluation of program outcomes
•Assist in managing relationships with key program partners related to grant-funded programs and initiatives
•Conduct site visits, tours and meetings with donors in coordination with appropriate program staff; prepare the CEO, COO and other executives for such visits
•Develop donor profiles and case studies; support other departments in developing copy for key communications pieces when requested
•Partner with trustees to leverage their connections with foundations and others
•Represent CPBI at professional forums, meetings, conferences, seminars and special events
•Other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
•Bachelor's degree (Master's degree in appropriate area a plus)
•A minimum of five (5)+ years of experience as a professional grant writer
•A minimum of five (5)+ years of management experience
•A minimum of three (3)+ years of experience in government relations
•Demonstrated success in researching, writing and securing grants
•Experience in developing proposals for funding at the state, foundation and federal level
•Expert technical skills in areas of mapping, census data usage and Internet research
•Expert-level skills in Microsoft Office and Internet-related applications
•Superior written and verbal communication skills; exceptional presentation skills
•Must be dynamic, detail-oriented, well organized and able to work independently
•Excellent time management, planning and prioritization skills
•Ability to develop and sustain relationships with funders and partner organizations
•Not-for-profit experience and/or experience in public media education preferred
